I accidentally permanently deleted some important files and can’t find them in the Recycle Bin. Is there a reliable way to recover deleted files without overwriting or damaging the data?
If the files were deleted from an SSD with TRIM enabled, recovery may be unlikely because the drive can clear the deleted blocks fairly quickly. A traditional hard drive, SD card, or USB drive usually gives you a better chance, provided the deleted space has not been reused.
Stop using the affected drive immediately. Do not download recovery software onto it, install programs there, or save recovered files back to it. Every write can overwrite part of the deleted data. If it is your Windows system drive, shut the computer down and connect that drive to another computer, or boot from a separate recovery USB.
Check backups and cloud version history first, including OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, File History, and any application-specific autosave folders. If that gets nowhere, run a deep scan with a recovery program such as Disk Drill data recovery software. Install it on a different drive and restore anything it finds to a different physical drive. Previewing files before recovery is useful because a filename appearing in the scan does not guarantee that the file contents are intact.
For irreplaceable business files, photos, or documents, avoid repeated DIY scans and consider a professional recovery service before doing anything else. Software can help with logical deletion, but it cannot rebuild data that has already been overwritten, securely erased, or discarded by SSD TRIM.
Do not run CHKDSK, “repair” the drive, or reformat it, since those actions can make recovery worse. If the drive is unstable, create a sector-by-sector image first and scan the copy rather than repeatedly scanning the original.
Recovery is possible, but there’s no guarantee, especially if the files were deleted from an SSD with TRIM enabled. Stop using that drive immediately. Even browsing, downloading software, or installing a recovery program can overwrite the space where the deleted files still exist.
@zerologic9529 is right about imaging an unstable drive. If the drive appears healthy, you can scan it with a recovery tool such as Disk Drill, but install the program on another drive and save recovered files somewhere else too. Never recover them back onto the source drive during the first pass.
Before scanning, check any cloud sync service, File History, backups, and previous versions of the folder. Those are often faster and preserve filenames and folder structure, while raw recovery may return files with generic names or partial contents. If the data is irreplaceable or the drive is clicking, disconnect it and use a professional recovery service rather than experimenting.
Check the cloud trash before you touch any recovery software. OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox all keep their own deleted-items area that survives well past the local Recycle Bin, usually around 30 days. If those files ever synced, they might just be sitting there with names and folders intact, which beats anything a raw scan will hand you. People skip this because they assume ‘permanently deleted’ means gone everywhere, and it often doesn’t.
I mostly agree with the SSD TRIM warning from @zerologic9529 and @alpha_lucid_script, but I’d frame it more bluntly. If it was a modern SSD as your system drive and a few hours have passed, the odds are poor no matter what tool you throw at it. That’s not a reason to skip the scan, just a reason to not sink money into professional recovery for an SSD unless the data is worth serious cash. Spinning drives and memory cards are where you actually have a fighting chance.
Disk Drill is a fine first pass and the preview point already raised is the important one, since a recovered filename tells you nothing about whether the bytes are still good. The thing nobody mentioned though is how the deletion happened. Deleted from a network share or NAS? Recovery software running on your PC won’t see it, because your machine never held those blocks. In that case you image or scan the drive that physically stored the data, not the one you were sitting in front of.
