My laptop was advertised with an AI chip, but I can’t tell if it’s being used for anything in everyday tasks or AI apps. I’ve checked settings and performance tools, but nothing clearly shows when the chip is active. I need help figuring out how to verify whether the AI hardware is working, what software supports it, and whether I’m missing a setup step.
Short answer: often, no.
A lot of ‘AI chip’ laptops have an NPU, neural processing unit. It only works if an app is built to send work to it. Most daily stuff, web browsing, Office, video playback, file copies, even a lot of chatbots, still run on the CPU or GPU.
What it usually does today:
- Webcam effects. Background blur, eye contact, noise removal.
- Live captions or on-device transcription.
- Studio effects in Zoom, Teams, Windows Studio Effects.
- Some photo apps. Blur, upscale, object removeal.
- A few local AI apps. Small language models, image tools, Copilot features on supported PCs.
How to check:
- Open Task Manager.
- Go to Performance.
- Look for NPU. If you do not see it, your driver or Windows build might not expose it.
- While using a supported feature, watch NPU graphs.
Better test:
- Turn on Windows Studio Effects with your webcam.
- Start a Teams or Camera app preview.
- Check Task Manager for NPU activity.
If NPU stays at 0 percent, the feature is likely on CPU or GPU instead.
Important bit: many vendors advertised the chip before software support was mature. So the hardware is there, but it sits idle a lot. Kinda lame, yep.

I’d push back a little on @viajantedoceu only in this sense: an idle-looking NPU is not proof it’s useless. Some vendor integrations are annoyingly opaque, and a few workloads are so bursty you won’t catch them unless you’re specifically triggering them. So yeah, the chip may be doing something, just not enough to justify the sticker lol.
The bigger issue is this: a lot of ‘AI apps’ people use are cloud-first. ChatGPT in a browser, Copilot web stuff, image sites, online transcription, all that is happening on someone else’s hardware. Your laptop’s NPU gets to sit there like a gym membership in February.
What I’d check instead of just staring at perf graphs:
- App documentation. If the app doesn’t explicitly say NPU, neural engine, Ryzen AI, Intel AI Boost, Qualcomm Hexagon, etc, it probably isn’t using it.
- Vendor utilities. Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, Dell Optimizer, HP apps sometimes quietly toggle AI camera/audio features there.
- Windows feature lists by CPU family. Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm all support different things, and support is weirdly fragmented.
- Power draw and fan noise. If a local AI effect runs without waking the GPU much, that can be the NPU doing the lighter work.
Also, some NPUs are just weak compared to the marketing. Not broken, just limited. They’re good at narrow tasks, not magic accelerators for every ‘AI’ button you click.
So the short version: if you can’t identify a specific app/feature that claims NPU support, there’s a decent chance the chip is doing basicaly nothing most of the day. That’s been true for a lot of these laptops, annoyngly. If you post the exact CPU, people can tell you whether your ‘AI chip’ is actually useful yet or just future-proofing theater.
I mostly agree with @viajantedoceu, but I’d add one thing: the easiest proof is not Task Manager, it’s feature behavior.
If you disable or uninstall the vendor AI stack and nothing changes, your “AI chip” probably wasn’t part of your normal workflow. A lot of NPU use shows up as little quality-of-life stuff: background blur, eye contact, auto framing, live captions, noise reduction. If those keep working identically, they may be on CPU/GPU anyway.
Best test: run the same supported feature on battery and compare heat, battery drop, and responsiveness with hardware acceleration on vs off. NPUs usually matter more in efficiency than raw speed.
Pros for the “”: potentially better battery life, cooler video-call AI features, more future app support.
Cons for the “”: weak software support today, vague marketing, hard-to-verify usage, often irrelevant for browser AI.
So yes, the chip may be active sometimes. But for many people, it’s still more “specialized helper” than “daily game changer.”
